Overview of Learning Disability

A learning disability is a condition that limits a person’s capacity to process information, impacting their academic skills. Additionally, learning disabilities can create emotional and social strain for individuals and their families.

Contrary to what some people believe, learning disabilities are not related to intelligence. Rather, they are caused by differences in the brain.

There are many types of learning disabilities, including:

  • Dyslexia
  • Dysgraphia
  • Dyscalculia
  • Auditory processing disorder
  • Language processing disorder
  • Nonverbal learning disabilities
  • Visual perceptual/visual motor deficit

Benefits of Learning Disability Assessments

Learning disabilities are common and nothing to be ashamed of. Studies indicate that around 10% of people in the United States have some form of learning setback. This number may even be higher with many instances going unreported.

Assessments of learning disabilities are necessary to ensure a person is accurately diagnosed and can receive the proper care to reduce associated limitations. The sooner a person is diagnosed with a learning disability, the sooner they can receive suitable care.

The Learning Disability Assessment Process

A learning disability assessment is performed to evaluate a person’s cognitive and processing abilities, including working memory, processing speed, visual processing, non-verbal reasoning skills, and verbal knowledge.

At Measuring Minds, our learning disability evaluations consist of in-depth exams to ensure accurate assessments. Our process involves the following steps:

  • Interview: Individuals will meet with our team so we can get a better understanding of their symptoms and drawbacks.
  • Questionnaire: Carefully created questionnaires are used to narrow down possible learning disabilities for more accurate assessments.
  • Behavioral observations: We closely monitor a person’s behavior to target their symptoms.
  • Additional tests: We perform specialized testing to assess a person’s skills, such as cognitive abilities, language, and motor skills to narrow down an individual’s strengths/weaknesses.
