Overview of ADHD & the Importance of Assessment
What Is ADHD?
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder impacting children and adults. ADHD is typically first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Those with this condition may have difficulties paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or being overly active.
The exact cause of ADHD is still being researched by scientists. There’s growing evidence to suggest that genetics contribute to ADHD, as several genes have been linked to the disorder. However, experts haven’t yet concluded a specific gene or gene combination is the cause of ADHD.
Why Get an ADHD Assessment?
Treating and managing symptoms of ADHD requires accurate diagnosis, which is determined with an ADHD assessment. A correct diagnosis of the disorder will lead to better management of symptoms and improved quality of life.
Furthermore, several other health conditions, including anxiety, depression, and sleep problems, as well as different types of behavioral concerns, can share similar symptoms with ADHD. Therefore, appropriate assessment is required to identify the underlying issue and dictate treatment.
Symptoms of ADHD
ADHD can affect children and adults throughout their lives. Those with the chronic developmental disorder may experience the following symptoms:
- Inattention: Having trouble keeping attention and prone to making careless mistakes.
- Hyperactivity: Displaying too much energy and constantly moving or talking, making it difficult to sit still for periods of time.
- Impulsivity: Instances of acting without thinking or showcasing difficulties in practicing self-control.
Depending on which symptoms are most prevalent will help experts identify the type of ADHD a person has. The various types include:
- Predominantly inattentive
- Predominantly hyperactive-impulsive
- Combined presentation (a combination of inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive symptoms)
Benefits of Early ADHD Diagnosis
It’s estimated about 4% of Americans above the age of 18 experience symptoms associated with ADHD regularly. These individuals have likely had those behaviors since childhood but were never properly diagnosed and treated.
Identifying ADHD early is crucial to helping minimize ongoing symptoms and prevent other drawbacks linked to the disorder, such as academic failure, low self-esteem, and strained relationships.
The ADHD Assessment Process
To ensure accurate diagnosis Measuring Minds conducts an in-depth assessment of you or your child. Our ADHD assessment process involves the following details:
- Interview: Our licensed and nationally certified school psychologist conducts a face-to-face or virtual interview to discuss symptoms, behavior, and health history.
- Questionnaire: You or your child will be given a questionnaire to fill out to provide us with a deeper understanding of the condition.
- Behavioral observation: We will spend time observing the behavior of the person being evaluated, looking for key indicators pointing to ADHD.
- Other tests: We will conduct additional tests to look for specific areas of impairment and rule out other possible conditions.
